God Hates You

All those bad beats you've been taking lately?

Apparently, that's because you're a bad christian.

"At the end of the day the Christian is the only one who really knows how Texas Hold-em works. So next time you suck out on the river be sure and thank the one who did it, the Poker God- the Triune God, the only true God."

Whodda thunk it?

Talk about a lesson in missing the point. The problem is you assume that we believe when things don't go good for you that it is because God doesn't like you. That would also imply that God's job is to make you happy if you make Him happy. Unfortunatly your theology comes more from television than scripture.

What point is it that you think I missed?

I assume nothing about your beliefs, but I doubt God is stacking the deck in favor of (or against) his preferred degenerate gamblers. When any of the poker players that I know speak of "The Poker Gods", they're talking about the mathematical concept of variance, and nothing more.

And I daresay it's mighty forward of you to assume anything at all about _my_ theology, but I'll grant you some insight.

My belief system is that in a heads up match, I will take your stack.

But that may just be the whiskey talking.

P.S. For the sake of pedantry, I'd also like to point out that you mispelled the word "unfortunately", but don't worry, it's a common mistake.

I don't use the Poker God's comment because it just doesn't feel right to me. That said (or written), I don't bat an eye when I hear it, because it is said so much. It's just a saying, but we each have a choice in our voice.

Thanks for doing the questionnaire...

and as for the comment I left on your earlier post, I'm guessing part of your answers on my questionnaire answered the question of how much you made on that tourney. nice job man...

Just a question. Did the Poker gods , i.e. "the mathematical concept of variance", exist before man did?

Tommy, thanks for reading Fide-O. But Scott is right. No where in the Bible or in Gene's post is there any indication that only bad things happen to bad people. In fact, the Bible says that "it rains on the just and the unjust."

Jesus taught us that the world hated him and will hate us too. First Peter 1:6 teaches us that "bad things" are often necessary to strengthen our faith. In fact, Peter says "In this you greatly rejoice..."

So the point you missed, Tommy, was that Gene said that "God Hates You" because you got sucked out on the river. Gene's point was to use even a card game to remind everyone that a sovereign God is in control of all things.

No, I got that point.

My problem with this line of thinking is that historically, the most atrocious crimes committed are done so in the name of one deity or another, and
The very idea that there is a god that plays favorites leads to exactly this type of thinking.

If you believe that god is giving you the cards you need, then you have to believe that your god is intentionally taking away from your opponent... that he somehow thinks you are more deserving.

I choose to disagree, and prefer my religion seperate from my poker (and most other things as well).
